The U.S. state of Virginia (VA) is located on the Atlantic Coast of the Southern United States. Being the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents, it is also popularly known as the "Mother of Presidents". Called the gateway to the South, VA lies between New York and Florida and also close to the capital, Washington D.C.
The state is blessed with a great climate all year round. The climate of Virginia is described as a "Goldilocks Climate", not too hot and not too cold. The topography and type of weather are formed by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, that offers home to its plant and animal kingdom.
The Tidewater, Piedmont, Northern Virginia, Western Mountain and Southwestern Mountain are the five different regions of Virginia which offers visitors a wide range of outdoor recreational activities throughout the year. Some of these activities include snow-skiing, playing golf, bicycling, hiking, camping and plenty of water sports.
The Tidewater Climate Region that includes Virginia's Tidewater & Hampton Roads, the southern Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore Regions has average temperatures of around 35-48 (F) during the winters and about 71-85 (F) during the summer. The temperatures in the Piedmont Climate Region which comprises of the Central Virginia Region vary from 27-47 during the cold season (F) to 68-88 (F) during the hot summer. The Northern VA Climate Region includes Northern Virginia and northern Chesapeake Bay Regions and has cooler temperatures compared to the other four regions. The summers range between 61-86 (F) while the winter temperatures fall in the range of 19-42 (F). The Western Mountain Climate Region and the Southwestern Mountain Climate Region comprising of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley Region, Virginia's Southwest Blue Ridge Highlands and Heart of Appalachia are characterized by almost similar temperature variations with the winter temperatures ranging from 26-45 (F) while the summers are between 62-87 (F).
